Glossary: SEER Rating - Energy Efficiency Terms
Learn about SEER Rating and how it relates to energy efficiency and rebates in Ontario.
SEER Rating
Definition: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio - measures the cooling efficiency of heat pumps and air conditioners. Higher SEER ratings indicate better efficiency.
SEER ratings range from 13 to 25, with higher numbers indicating better efficiency. Ontario rebate programs typically require minimum SEER ratings of 15 or higher.
How SEER is Calculated
SEER is calculated by dividing the total cooling output during a typical cooling season by the total electrical energy input during the same period.
SEER Rating Categories
- 13-14 SEER: Standard efficiency (minimum legal requirement)
- 15-16 SEER: High efficiency (qualifies for most rebates)
- 17-20 SEER: Very high efficiency
- 21+ SEER: Ultra-high efficiency
Why SEER Matters
- Higher SEER = Lower energy bills
- Better for the environment
- May qualify for additional rebates
- Improved home comfort
